WHAT IS THE ZOO TEEN PROGRAM?
The Zoo Teen Program is an immersive summer program at Henry Vilas Zoo for teens ages 14-17 who care about animals, the environment, and making a difference. Over eight weeks, participants will explore real world conservation issues, go behind the scenes at the zoo, and connect with professionals working in a variety of zoo related fields including animal care, environmental science, and advocacy.
Each week of the program will focus on a different conservation theme, guided by guest speakers from local conservation organizations. Teens will participate in animal encounters, hands-on projects, creative storytelling, and collaborative advocacy work, gaining skills that build confidence, leadership, and career awareness.
Unlike camps or single-day programs, the Zoo Teen Program offers sustained, small group learning that encourages deeper connections, creativity and real impact. This program is perfect for teens who are curious, creative, and passionate about animals, conservation, or future careers in science and environmental fields.
Through this program teens will:
- Gain exposure to conservation and animal related careers
- Build real world skills, such as communication, teamwork, critical thinking, creativity, and problem solving through hands-on projects
- Gain advocacy and leadership experience – participants will apply what they learn and create an advocacy project focused on taking action and making an impact
- Have creative storytelling opportunities using art, design, and conservation messages
- Gain a deeper understanding of conservation and animal care
- Go behind the scenes at the zoo and learn about our animals’ stories and how they connect to global and local conservation challenges
- Gain confidence and independence
- Connect to their local community by learning about conservation efforts in Dane County, and seeing how our actions can make a difference close to home
Who should apply?
Teen applicants should:
- Be 14-17 years old at the start of the program
- Be able to attend the majority of schedule program meetings and events throughout the summer and have reliable transportation to/from the zoo

- Enjoy hands-on learning, creative projects, or problem-solving
- Be interested in exploring careers related to animals, science, conservation, education, or advocacy
